My Husband Can Take Photos, so Why Hire a Birth Photographer?

I asked myself this same question when I was pregnant the first time.
I had BOTH my husband AND my doula with me, so I figured I’d be covered in the picture department! Unfortunately, I have only two photos from my son’s birth day – one of me immediately after giving birth (looking completely exhausted and taken from the least flattering angle, of course), and one of my placenta (because my husband thought it was so cool!). Looking back, I deeply regret missing the chance to get photos from that day which I know I would absolutely cherish. I was in labor for four days and pushed for over three hours, free of pain medicine. I rocked the heck out of that birth, and I don’t have any photos to tell the story (worse, my mommy brain is already starting to forget some of the details). Plus, I don’t have any photos of my husband acting as the loving support system that he proved to be that day, nor of my doula cheering us on and holding my hand.
Birth photography is something a lot of people still don’t know about
Some of you who have heard of birth photography may think it’s not for you. But it isn’t just about taking a photo or two of your baby after he’s born – it’s about telling the story of your baby’s birth. From the smallest details, like your hospital room number or the music playing on your iPhone, to the important moments like your spouse holding your hand as you get through a contraction, to the incredible moment when you lay eyes on your newly born baby for the very first time. Those details are so special and so important, and photos can help tell the story of your child’s birth for years to come.
Hiring a professional birth photographer is so important, because the birth process can happen much more quickly (or be more chaotic, as in my case) than expected, and often, no one remembers to take those pictures.
Perhaps even more importantly, if your spouse is taking the pictures, guess who won’t exist in any of those pictures?
You will need your support team to comfort you and support you as you labor. You will need them to love on you after your baby is born. These same people already very much have their work cut out for them just being there for you without the additional worry of trying to capture every important moment of such a momentous occasion. A professional birth photographer can capture all of those moments in a beautiful, loving way. In addition, a good birth photographer will stay out of the way, so that you won’t even notice she’s there. She will truly document exactly what unfolds without interference.
The day your child is born is one of the most important days of your life, a day that you will want to remember even when the details fade. Professional photos can help make that happen.
